Identifying Mongoose Pro JLR Clone Cables
Original vs Clone Differences
A few years ago, Mongoose Pro JLR clones were almost identical to the original Mongoose Pro, with stable connections to vehicles. However, recent clones (from the end of 2022 onwards) have significant differences:
- Original and Early Clones: These had PCBs and components nearly identical to the original Mongoose Pro, including an ATMEL chip.
- Recent Clones (2023-2024): These have a different PCB layout and components. The ATMEL chip has been replaced with a BGA package instead of QFP.

Issues with Cheap Clones
While the cheap clones work fine with original Mongoose Pro JLR drivers, they often have issues connecting to vehicles, particularly with Toyota/Lexus cars using Techstream, leading to the “Unable to connect to VIM” error. This issue is due to the design of the clone device, not the software or drivers.
Fixing Mongoose JLR Pro Clone Connection Issues
To fix the connection issue:
- Identify the Chassis Ground and Signal Ground Pins:
- Chassis Ground: Pin 4
- Signal Ground: Pin 5
- Connect the Pins:
- Use a piece of wire to connect pins 4 and 5.
- Alternatively, install a jumper to switch the connection ON/OFF as needed.
This fix resolves connection issues, allowing users to read MS-CAN and HS-CAN with recent mongoose clones from China.
